open prompt #8

With more and more people being over weight, there now is a heavy reliant on weight loss surgeries. There are many different types of surgery out there that will help people loose the weight they can not loose on their own. There is a surgery that puts a band on your stomach limiting the amount of food you eat.  This makes you less hungry which means you are not eating as much as you would normally eat.  Along with making the stomach smaller, this surgery also slows down your metabolism making you feel full for a longer period of time.   Yeah, this surgery sounds great, but there is one major downfall, its cost. It is very expensive to have the band put on your stomach, which means not as many people are in the range to have the surgery done who actually need it.

  1. I think that for a surgery of this calbur there is another major downfall besides cost. The riskiness of this invasive surgery would be a factor in the decision making process. Every procedure this risky is associated with many different side effects and risks during the procedure and afterwards. This may sound great on paper but in reality does everyone come out of this safe and sound??

  2. I personally know a girl who was a sophomore in my high school who opted for this surgery. After the surgery was completed, she began dropping weight so fast it was a bit ridiculous. I am forced to believe after watching this girl come to school everyday that dropping that much weight in such a short amount of time cannot be good for you. I agree with Katie that cost cant be the only major downfall. I think health comes before money.

  3. I have heard something about this surgery on the hews recently. Not only was it expensive, but it use to be only allowed for those patients that were considered morbidly obese. Recently, however the FDA has approved the surgery for those who are just considered obese. So if the government approved the surgery for those with less of a weight problem, then doesn't that mean that it is safe. So if that is true than is health really a problem with this surgery?

  4. I personally know two people who have undergone this surgery. I would never recommend it for anyone because both of the experiences have been horrible. One person lost so much weight that now her skin is extremely bagging and wants to undergo even more plastic surgeries to lose her access skin. The other instance was that this surgery did not work for her and actually ended up gaining all of her weight back and had several stomach viruses and infections right after the surgery. In my opinion, I feel the surgery is unnecessary and a lazy excuse to loose weight.

  5. I love how lazy people are becoming now. They dont want to go to the gym or eat right or just exercise at home so they are willing to spend thousands on surgery. A gym membership costs $30 at most at the gym I go to. Running around your block is free! I love how people are becoming so lazy with weight loss that they pay this kind of money.
